"ومع الوقت، فرغت القرية كلها، ذلك أن الرجال لم يحتملوا تلك التذكرة الدائمة بما اقترفوه من خطأ جسيم بحق مكان مقدس. أما الجامع فلا يزال قائماً في مكانه، لم يهجر تماماً ففي الليالي التي يغيب فيها القمر، يظهر في أعلى المئذنة مخلوق غريب، نصفه طائر ونصفه امرأة، يرفع الأذان. يدعونها حورية الصحراء، وهي تدعو لصلاة الفجر.
ويقول من سمعها أن صوتها في غاية الإشراق، كما لو أن الشمس والقمر قد اجتمعا فيه. ويقول من رآها أنها تبهر الأبصار. ويحكون عن شعر أشقر وبشرة سمراء، وعن عينين كأن فيهما حبائل البرق. ويقال إن ما من شيء تطلبه النفس التي تقع في شراكها يصعب عليها، وأنها مصدر الينبوع الذي يروي الواحة، وإن ابتسامتها تظل تتصادى في قلبك بعد فترة طويلة من جفاف دموع الفرح التي طفرت من عينيك وجرت حتى قدميك لدى سماعك صوتها، وأنت واقف أسفل المئذنة. ومع هذا، فإن مجرد ذكر اسمها، روحية، يثير خوفاً غامضاً ونادراً كالمرجان الأسود، وعميقاً ومكتنفاً بالأسرار كالبحر الذي يحتويه".
