إن البحث في حرية العقيدة هو بحث من أجل حق يمكن أن يتمتع به الإنسان بوصفه إنسانًا، إنه البحث في حرية الإنسان في اعتقاد ما يشاء بغير قسر أو إكراه أو اضطهاد، وذلك لأن العقيدة تعد هي مصدر العواطف النبيلة، ومغرس المشاعر الطيبة، ومنبت الأحاسيس الشريفة، فما من فضيلة إلا تصدر عنها ولا صالحة إلا وترد إليها. ومن أجل جاء هذا الكتاب والذي يتناول دراسة جادة عن حرية العقيدة في الشريعة الإسلامية، تلك الشريعة التي لا تميز بين الناس بسبب الجنس أو اللون، كما تقر مبدأ المساواة بين الناس جميعًا، ولا تهدر حقوق أحد لاختلاف الدين، شريعة لا تجبر الإنسان على عقيدة أو مذهب لا يريده، إنما كان نهجها الدعوة بالحكمة والموعظة الحسنة والإقناع العقلي والوجداني. تلكم هي الشريعة الإسلامية، التي أضحت الحاجة ماسة في العودة إلى مبادئها وقواعدها السمحة، لا لإنقاذ المسلمين مما حل بهم من بلاء وانحطاط، إنما لإنقاذ البشرية جميعًا من حالة التيه والضلال في عالم القيم والأخلاق، عالم الروح والضمير.
وتبدو أهمية الكتاب في البحث في كشف النقاب في مفهوم حرية العقيدة في الشريعة الإسلامية، ومدى مواءمتها أو اختلافها مع هذا المفهوم في الأنظمة الوضعية. ومما يزيد هذا المفهوم وضوحًا بيان مفهوم الحرية في الأنظمة الوضعية وفي الشريعة الإسلامية، ثم التعرض لنبذة تاريخية عن حرية العقيدة ومتى تقررت في الأنظمة الوضعية؟ كما تقتضي دراسة حرية العقيدة في الشريعة الإسلامية أيضًا، بيان مصدر هذه الحرية، والأسس التي استندت إليها، وهل من إكراه أو قسر وقع على الشعوب أو على الناس لإدخالهم في الإسلام؟ وهل اعتمدت الشريعة الإسلامية الأدلة البينة، والإقناع وسائل لدعوة الناس؟ وما حكم التاريخ الإسلامي على إقرار هذه الحرية لغير المسلمين؟ وكذا بيان العلاقة بين حرية العقيدة وغيرها من حريات الفكر الأخرى. وغيرها من الأسئلة التي يسعى الكتاب الإجابة عليها مثل الجهاد وموقف الإسلام من المرتدين عن الإسلام وعرضه لأسباب تجريم الردة ومظاهرها.
