يوم الثلاثاء، كانت هناك أربع نعاج مذبوحةٍ في فنتبرون، في الألب، ويوم الخميس، تسعٌ في بييرفور.
أهو ذئبٌ وحيدٌ؟ ماكرٌ، قاسٍ، بمؤخرته الخفيضة فوق قوائمه الرمادية؟ وحش المركانتور.
ولكن في قرية سان فيكتور ديمون، لا يصدق الجميع ذلك، أنه وحشٌ، ليس وحشاً، إنه رجلٌ، رجلٌ ذئبيٌّ.
كانت ممدّدةً على القش الموحل، على ظهرها، وذراعاها متباعدتان، وقد رُفع قميص نومها حتى ركبتيها، وفي العنق، كان هناك جرحٌ ينبثق الدم منه بغزارةٍ.
في باريس، كان جان باتيست آدامسبرغ - المفتش الحالم و"البرّي" بطل "لغز الحلقات الزرقاء" - أمام جهاز التلفاز، يترقّب أخبار المركانتور، وأغلق عينيه، طفولته في البيرينيه، وأصوات العجائز... كالجمر، يا فتاي، كالجمر، تومض عينا الذنب ليلاً.
