إن علم الفرائض من أجل العلوم الشرعية التي لا غنى للمسلم عن معرفتها، وقواعد الميراث محدودة ومحصورة، وتكاد الآيات من سورة النساء أن تحتوي أحكام الميراث إلا قليلاً، والسنة الصحيحة جاءت موضحة ومفصلة للأحكام، فقواعد الميراث مع قلتها، وسهولة حفظها، تعدّ من أصعب الأحكام تطبيقاً، حيث يحتاج القاضي أو الشارح لوقت وجهد طويل، لإتمام تحديد أنصبة المواريث، لذلك عمد بعض العلماء إلى القول بأن هذا العلم هو فن مستقل يحتاج إلى دراسة وافية، لتحليل قواعده.
و"أرجوزة الرحيبة" من أشهر ما ألف في علم الفرائض وأفضله، لذا فقد عمد إلى شرحها الكثير من أهل هذا الفن، ويعد شرح العلامة "سبط المارديني" من أهم وأشهر هذه الشروح نفعاً وأخصرها عبارة، وأروعها بياناً.
أما عمل المحقق "أحمد المزيدي" في هذا الكتاب فقد ارتكز على تخريج الأحاديث الشريف من كتب السنة الصحيحة وترجمة الاعلام الواردة في النص، وتوثيق المسائل والتعريفات التي ذكرها الشارح في الكتاب والتعليق على بعض المواضيع التي تحتاج إلى ذلك.
