يمثّل هذا الكتاب عرْضاً تحليلياً لطبيعة النقد الفلسفي، وعلاقته بمشـروع التغيير أو ما يسمى بالمشـروع النهضوي تارةً والمشـروع الحضاري العربي تارةً أُخرى. وقد اتخذ هذا المشـروع من التغيير والتقدّم قضـيةً مركزية، الَّتي تتفرّع عنها القضايا والإشكاليات الأُخرى الَّتي يدور حولها الفكر العربي الحديث والمعاصـر، لتحديد عوامل تعثُّر مشـروعه بسبب غياب النقد الفلسفي كقاعدة معرفية لا بد منها لحماية المشـروع من عوائقه المعرفيَّة والاجتماعيَّة الَّتي ألمّت به كالانتقائية والتلفيق والتجريبية والنماذج القياسـية القديمة.
ولم يكن بإمكان المفكر العربي في عصـر النهضة في القرن التاسع عشـر الوصول إلى مستوى النقد الفلسفي لنقد معطيات الحداثة الَّتي يبحث عنها، لتوظيفها واستعمالها في معركة التقدّم والنهضة وانتشال أمّته من التأخّر التاريخي, أولاً: لضعف الفلسفة أولغيابها أصلاً؛ إنتاجاً وترجمةً ووجهة نظر كلّية، وثانياً: لأنَّ أيَّ نقدٍ لمنظومة الحداثة الليبرالية هو انتقاص من جدارتها وكفاءة مفاهيمها الإجرائية, ولوحصل ذلك لفتح الباب للبحث عن منظومة بديلة، أوتطلَّب الأمر العمل على تأسـيس منظومة جديدة، ولم يكن بإمكان التاريخ العربي وشـروطه النهضوية أن توفر خياراً من هذا القبيل.
وعلى هذا الأساس وجد المفكر النهضوي نفسه في موقع المبشـر والداعية الَّذي يتطلب عمله استكمال نواقص المنظومة المستعارة وسدّ ثغراتها لتسويقها على العامة. ولم يكن مطلوباً من هذا الشعب -كما تتصور النخبة المأخوذة بالمشـروع الحداثوي الليبرالي- إلا تبنّي تلك المنظومة وتداولها للتحرك إلى الأمام، وليس التوقف للتأمل في بنيتها التكوينية ومشكلاتها المعرفيَّة.
