واستخدم الإحصاء كطريقة لعدد والتصنيف في قديم الزمان كان البابليون يستخدمون علم العد للعسكر والمحاربين وكانوا يصنفون المجتمع إلى طبقات حسب إنتحائهم وأنسابهم.
إضافة إلى أن في زمن حامورابي تم تصنيف المجتمع البابلي إلى حضر وهم سكنة المدن ورعاة وهم سكنه خارج المدن وكان يطلق عليهم باللغة البابلية (آراب) وغيرها من عمليات العدو والحصر وجاءه في القرآن الكريم في العديد من الآيات القرآنية كلمة الإحصاء "وأحصاهم عدداً" وتفسيرها هي عملية الحصر والعد.
