منذ الثمانينات من القرن الماضي أصبحت الهياكل التنظيمية لكبريات الشركات تتضمن إدارة اللوجيستيات في مكان الصدارة منها، وبالرغم من حداثة هذا الفرع من فروع المعرفة إلا أنها تتسم بالتطور السريع، وتتميز إدارة اللوجيستيات (الإمداد والتوزيع) بقدرتها على مساعدة منظمات الأعمال في مواجهة التحديات التي تواجهها حيث يعد علم اللوجيستيات أحد نماذج الإدارة المتكاملة والتي يمكن المنظمة من زيادة كفائتها في إدارة عملياتها, ويتناول ذلك العلم كافة الأنشطة المسئولة عن تدبير وتحرك المواد الخام والأجزاء والمكونات التي تدخل في العملية الإنتاجية والمنتجات تامة الصنع سواء كانت تلك الحركة في اتجاه المنظمة، أو خارج المنظمة إلى أسواقها.
وبالتالي يمكن اعتبار أنشطة اللوجيستيات عند معالجتها على أسس علمية نظام متكامل يعمل على تدفق المواد الخام والسلع والخدمات من وإلى المنظمة بالشكل الذي يؤدي إلى تمتع المنظمة بميزة تنافسية في أسواقها ومن هنا كان اهتمام المنظمات بعلم إدارة اللوجيستيات كأحد مظاهر الإدارة الحديثة.
وهذا الكتاب ما هو إلا محاولة متواضعة لتوضيح أهمية ذلك الفرع من فروع المعرفة، وذلك من خلال فصوله التالية:
