تمثل صناعة المعجم مجالًا هامًا من مجالات علم اللغة التطبيقي. وقد كان للعرب القدماء قدم راسخة في صناعة المعجم، وتظهر أهمية الدراسة في اتجاه البحث لدراسة معاجم مجمع اللغة العربية اللغوية العامة التي تعد مثالًا للمعجم العربي المعاصر. ومن خلال الدراسة تظهر مدى التحديات والصعوبات التي تواجه صناعة المعجم العربي حديثًا في مؤسسة لغوية (مجمع اللغة العربية).
وهذا الكتاب الأول في سلسة دراسات معجمية، وقد قسمته إلى تمهيد وثلاثة أبواب وخاتمة: التمهيد: ويتناول قضيتين هي مصطلح المعجم، ونظرة تاريخية سريعة للمعجم العربي، الباب الأول: ويتناول معاجم المجمع ومادتها، وينقسم إلى فصلين الفصل الأول: (معاجم المجمع)، الفصل الثاني: مادة المعاجم.
والباب الثاني: ويناقش مداخل المعاجم وينقسم إلى فصلين: الفصل الأول: ويتناول مصطلح المدخل وتصنيف المداخل، وخصائصها، الفصل الثاني: ويتناول ترتيب المداخل في معاجم المجمع، ويبدأ أولًا بنظرة تاريخية لتريب المداخل في المعاجم قديماً وحديثاً، ثم يناقش ترتيب المداخل في معاجم المجمع. والخاتمة: وتناولت العوامل المؤثرة في العمل المعجمي بالمجمع.
