عبد الرحمن عبد الرحمن سيد أحمد البرقوقي، المعروف ﺑ «عبد الرحمن البرقوقي»: أديب وناقد مصري، ولد بمحافظة الغربية عام ١٨٧٦م، تعلَّم في الأزهر الشريف، ودرس على يد الشيخ المرصفي، كما استفاد من دروس الإمام محمد عبده. أصدر بحُرِّ مالهِ مجلةً شهرية سُميت بمجلة «البيان»، وكان يكتب بها العديد من عمالقة الأدب أمثال العقاد والمازني وشكري وغيرهم. وللبرقوقي العديد من المؤلفات؛ منها «شرح ديوان المتنبي» و«شرح ديوان حسان». وقد توفي عام ١٩٤٤م.

"مالئ الدنيا وشاغل الناس" هو المتنبي الشاعر النابغة الذي عرفه الخيل والليل والبيداء والسيف والرمح والقرطاس والقلم، ما زال حيّاً من خلال قصائده التي حفلت بإبداعاته الشعرية في كل غرض من أغراض الشعر التي تناولها فحظي شعره بالحكم والأمثال، واختص بالإبداع في وصف مواقف القتال، حتى تظن أن الفريقين قد تقابلا والسلاحين قد تواصلا، وعلى الحقيقة فإنه خاتم الشعراء ومهما وصف فهو فوق الوصف وفوق الإطراء. وقد تنادى الشراح إلى قصائده فألفوا فيها الكتب، فكثرت الشروحات وتنوعت مستوياتها وأغراضها، وياتي هذا الكتاب ليعطي فكرة عن أهم الشروح حيث عمد المؤلف إلى إيراد جميع تفاسير الشراح من متقدمين ومتأخرين، وأقوال نقدة المتنبي، من متعصبين له ومتعصبين عليه، مكثراً من الشواهد، والأشباه والنظائر، شارحاً ما غمض من هذه الشواهد والأشباه، ومن عبارات الشراح حتى صار هذا الشرح شرحاً للمتنبي، وشرحاً لشروح المتنبي.
تلاقت في شرح ديوان المتنبي هذا كل الشروح بعد تهذيبها وتنقيحها. حيث أورد الشارح فيه جميع تفاسير الشراح من متقدمين ومتأخرين، وأقوال نقدة المتنبي، كما استفاض في إيراد الشواهد، والأشباه والنظائر، وشرح ما غمض من هذه الشواهد والأشباه ومن عبارات الشرح حتى أربى هذا الشرح على الشروح السابقة كلها مجتمعة، وحتى صار شرحاً للمتنبي وشرحاً لشروح المتنبي يغني عن سائرها.
