جمع الإسكندري في كتابه هذا المشتبه في الرسم من أسماء المواضع والبلدان، ورتبها على حروف الهجاء، فبلغت في مجموعها 859 باباً، وقد رجع في حصر هذه المادة إلى كثير من الكتب في التاريخ واللغة، وإلى دواوين كثير من الشعراء، فاستقى منها مادة كتابه، وقد أحصى منها المحقق في مقدمته قرابة ثلاثين مرجعاً. وقام على تحقيق الكتاب وخدمته علامة الجزيرة وجغرافيُّها الشيخ حمد الجاسر رحمه الله، وقد حرص على تقديم صورة مطابقة للأصل المخطوط بقدر الاستطاعة، مع التنبيه على ما فيه من أخطاء.
