يتضمن هذا الكتاب مجموعة مقالات ظهرت في بادئ الأمر في صحيفة "بوهيميا" الكوبية الكبيرة، وهي صحيفة القوات المسلحة الكوبية التي أنشئت في كوبا بعد انتصار الثورة، كما سيجيء في هذا الكتاب. لذلك كان من الطبيعي أن تضاف إلى هذه المقالات، حسب رأي "تشي" نفسه، مقالات أخرى نشرها هو نفسه قبل وبعد نشر الأصل في صحيفة "بوهيميا". ولهذا فإن هذا الكتاب هو أكثر كمالاً من النسخة التي نشرت في كوبا نفسها. وسيجد القارئ فيه سرداً متتابعاً وتفصيلياً تاريخياً واضحاً للعمليات العسكرية التي جرت في الجزيرة الكبيرة "كوبا".
ومذكرات "تشي" تدل بكل وضوح على أنه لم يكن يعتبر نفسه مؤرخاً ولكنه كان يعتبر نفسه شاهد عيان ينقل مشاركته الشخصية في تاريخ الحرب الثورية الحديثة. وهي تنشر، بهذا الترتيب، لأول مرة وتستدعي الإعجاب بها منذ أول وهلة، فقد لاقت إقبالاً كبيراً حتى الآن، بل وترجمت إلى أغلب لغات العالم.
كما يستعرض هذا الكتاب المراحل التاريخية التي مرت بها كوبا منذ اكتشافها على يد كريستوف كولومبوس، فغدت مستعمرة إسبانية منذ ذلك اليوم، واستطاعت كوبا بعد ذلك أن تتحرر من الاستعمار الأميركي من جديد. وليس هناك من يمكنه وصف خيبة الأمل التي أصابت الكوبيين، فلقد سقطوا في استقلال مشبوه تحت سيطرة الولايات المتحدة الأميركية إلى أن كانت ثورة فيديل كاسترو ورفيق دربه تشي غيفارا صاحب هذه المذكرات.
