للموحِّدين (الدّروز) اليوم رئاسات روحيّة في لبنان وسورية وفلسطين باسم مشيخة العقل، معتّرف بها رسمياً، ترمز، ككلِّ رئاسة روحية لأيّة طائفة، إلى كيانيتهم وشخصيتهم المعنوية بين سائر الطوائف، وأقدمها وأشهرها الرئاسة الروحيّة في لبنان التي ظهرت منذ عهد الإمارة البحترية التنوخية.
عُرف متولّي الرئاسة الروحيّة في لبنان بألقاب عدّة، هي الشيخ، والشيخ الأكبر أو الشيخ الكبير، وشيخ العصر، وشيخ البلدان، وشيخ البلاّد، وشيخ المشايخ، وعُرف منذ القرن الثامن عشر بلقب "شيخ العقل"، وأصله "شيخ العقّال".
وفي هذا الكتاب الذي أضعه بين أيدي القرّاء الكرم، عرض موسّع لمسيرة الشيخ محمد في الجهاد والعطاء، فيه فصول من تاريخ الموحِّدين (الدروز) الإجتماعيّ، ومن تاريخ لبنان السياسي، بحيث لم أؤرّخ للشيخ محمد فقط، بل أرّخت أيضاً لمرحلةٍ كان أحد أعلامها البارزين.
فعسى أن أكون وفّقت في الإحاطة بجميع جوانب حياته الطويلة الحافلة بالنّشاطات الكثيرة المختلفة، وفي تقديم عربون وفاءٍ له لما قدّم لطائفته وللبنان.
