تحاول هذه الدراسة أن تتتبع نشأة القصة القصيرة بمعناها الفني الحديث في الغرب ثم في البلاد العربية ذلك لأن القصة القصيرة فن حديث العهد لم تعرفه الآداب الغربية إلا مع النصف الثاني من القرن التاسع عشر، وهذا هو الشق الأول من الدراسة.
أما الشق الثاني فهو محاولة الوقوف على بعض الخصوصيات الجمالية للقصة القصيرة والتي اتفق النقاد على أنها من جماليات القصة أو التي ابتكرها بعض كتابها، وذلك مثل فنون السرد المختلفة بصري وسمعي وغنائي وغيرها من ظواهر أسلوبية أخرى تدخل في النسيج العام للقصة وذلك عن طريق طرح نماذج متنوعة للقصة القصيرة في الآداب الغربية والعربية منذ القرن التاسع عشر وحتى النصف الثاني من القرن العشرين.
