"بين الهلال والصليب.. وضع اليهود في القرون الوسطى" كتاب وضعه مؤلفه بهدف أن يبين لماذا تباينت مسارات العلاقات بين اليهود والمسلمين من جهة واليهود والمسيحيين من جهة ثانية في القرون الوسطى. وهو في هذا يحاول أن يتبين الأسباب التي جعلت العلاقة بين المسلمين واليهود أقل اضطهاداً من العلاقة بين المسيحية واليهودية وهو يسعى أيضاً إلى تقديم دراسة أوسع لعلاقة اليهود بالمسلمين والمسيحيين في القرون الوسطى والإسلام الذي يعنيه المؤلف كما يقول هو الإسلام السني، أي ذلك الشكل الأرثوذكسي والشكل الغالب من الدين الذي هو مصدر السياسة الإسلامية تجاه اليهود وغيرهم على حد قوله.
وقد حاول المؤلف أن يبين من خلال المقارنة أن وضعية اليهودي ككافر في العالم المسيحي الغربي أقل التباساً ووجوده أكثر عرضة للخطر مما كان عليه وضع اليهود في الإسلام. وقد ألزم المؤلف نفسه بمنهجية صارمة إذ نظر في مراحل متشابهة من التطور في حياة اليهود في الغرب اللاتيني والشرق الإسلامي.
يذكر أن المؤلف هو أستاذ دراسات الشرق الأوسط بجامعة برنستون بالولايات المتحدة. من مواليد 1943 وهو أحد أعلام البحث التاريخي حول اليهود في القرون الوسطى.
