Recent events in the Middle East has made the reprinting of this volume particularly opportune. Professor Ziadeh, of the Amarican University of Beirut, gives an account of the contemporary scene in Syria and the Lebanon, and reviews regional and international issues from the viewpoints of both nations.
His book opens with an introductory section dealing with their geography and early history, and the first part continues with the story of their struggle for autonomy and the steps taken to from two independent States. The second part is devoted to present-day matters: the economic, social, and political structure of the States are analysed at some length; while in a chapter entiled 'Human Society ' particular attention is paid to educational policies and media.
The book ends with a chapter which seeks to clarify the views of both countries on matters of urgency such as their relations to the Arab League, the Baghdad Pact, and Israel.
