السيد علي الأمين واسمه علي بن محمد بن علي تقي بن محمد الأمين هو عالم دين شيعي، مجتهد ومرجع ديني لبناني ولد في بلدة قلاوية العاملية سنة 1952 م، مدّرس لمادة أصول الفقه وبحث الخارج وداعية تعايش بين الطوائف اللبنانية ومقرّب بين أتباع الدّيانات.
هاجر إلى النجف في العراق وذلك في ستينات القرن العشرين.
وبلغ مرحلة الاجتهاد الشرعي في سن مبكرة بعد أن تلقى علومه الشرعية على يد علماء الحوزة العلمية في النجف ومنهم: آية الله الخوئي آية الله محمد باقر الصدر آية الله نصر الله المستنبط آية الله الروحاني درّس مادة أصول الفقه وبحث الخارج في حوزات النجف وقم ولبنان ودرس عنده المئات من طلاب العلوم الدينية من مختلف أنحاء الدّول الإسلامية والعربية.

يتضمن هذا الكتاب وقائع (ندوة) أو محاضرة ألقاها العلاّمة السيد علي الأمين بتاريخ 12 آذار من العام 1995م تحت عنوان "لبنان دولة الطائفة أم دولة الإنسان؟" وذلك في قاعة الويستيلا الكبرى في سيدني - استراليا، بدعوة من رابطة الخريجين العرب الأستراليين.
وفي هذا الإطار يوضح العلاّمة الأمين بعض الأسئلة التي يثيرها عنوان الندوة وأسئلتها مثل - ما هي نظرتنا إلى لبنان؟ - وما هي نظرتنا إلى الدولة المرجوة؟ - وكيف نصل إليها؟ أما عن نظرته إلى لبنان الوطن فيلخصها بمعادلة هي التي تعطي الصورة الواضحة عن لبنان الوطن، وهي: الجغرافيا + التاريخ + الإنسان = لبنان؛ وأما عن النظرة إلى الدولة، فيقول: أن الدولة يجب أن تكون مؤسسة بحجم الوطن في تشريعاتها ونظامها السياسي ... ولا يصح أن تكون الدولة لطائفة أو لجماعة، بل يجب أن يكون محورها الإنسان ودينها العدالة ... فالدولة ينبغي أن تقوم على أساس العيش المشترك وعلى العدالة في نظامها السياسي ...
هذا، في القسم الأول من الكتاب، أما القسم الثاني فيتضمن أسئلة الحضور والأجوبة عليها من قبل سماحته، وقد انقسمت الأسئلة إلى عدد من العناوين هي: مكانة العقل، لبنان هو معبدنا كله، تنظيم السلك الديني، الزواج المختلط دينياً، تحديد النسل، الزواج المدني، عن هوية الحاكم الدينية والإسلام السياسي، العلمانية والدين ... وأسئلة وأجوبة أخرى ذات صلة.
