يعتبر كتاب كليلة ودمنة كتاباً فلسفياً- أخلاقياً أو هو كتاب في العقل سيداً وفي الأخلاق حياة, ولا يصلح حال الإنسان إلا بهما. وما الفلسفة إلا إعمال العقل وتأسيس قيم إنسانية والنظر الى العالم لا في ما هو كائن فقط بل فيما يجب أن يكون عليه. وإذا كنا في بداية القرن الحادي والعشرين قد أبدعنا في عالم التقنية ما نقل حياتنا الى مستوى من التحكم بالطبيعة وتوظيفها لخدمة سعادتنا فإنا لم نزل نستشعر بمشكلة الإنسان, فكل الجهد الذي بذله العلماء في اكتشاف العالم لم يلغ من العالم الشرور المتعددة, أو لم يلغ أضداد المحاسن التي تحدث عنها كتاب كليلة ودمنة. فالعلم يضاده الجهل, والأدب يضاده ارتكاب الخطأ, والروية يقابلها السرعة الغريزية. بهذا المعنى يكون كتاب كليلة ودمنة كتاب معاصر, لأنه كتاب في الإنسان. وهو يدافع عن العقل لأن العقل هو الدعامة لجميع الأشياء, إنه سبب لكل خير ومفتاح كل سعادة, فليس لأحد غنى عن العقل. وفي هذا النص يظهر التناقض بين العقل من جهة وبين الحس من جهة أخرى. ذلك أن عالم العقل الذي هو عالم الخير والسعادة الروحية يقع في تناقض مع عالم اللذة المرتبطة بتلبية الحواس الخمس.
