يحتوي هذا الكتاب على سبعة فصول يناقش الفصل الأول من الكتاب اتجاهات معينة ظهرت في الأدب في كثير من الدول بعد الحرب العالمية الثانية، حددها جزئياً، إن لم يكن كلياً، الانفجار التكنولوجي للخمسينات والستينات من هذا القرن. ويتناول هذا الفصل الشعبية المتزايدة للأدب المستند إلى الوثائق، كما تناول أيضاً الأسباب التي يحتمل أن تكمن وراء اتساع قراءته ومحاولات التعرف إلى أسباب زيادة شعبية الخيال العلمي في لخمسينات وما تلاها والستينات وما أعقبها، كما تناول الفصل الأول أيضاً، تعليقات على الاتجاه إلى "التفلسف" في الأدب المعاصر (تمييزاً له عن "الأدب الفلسفي").
أما الفصلان الثاني والثالث فيتناولان هذا الموضوع الأخير بصورة أكثر تفصيلاً: فالفصل الثاني يفحص الاتجاه الواضح للكتاب العصريين لتحليل الحياة الحديثة في أسلوب فلسفي، في حين يتناول الفصل الثالث موضوع الزمن والفضاء كتفسير مسلم به لمفهوم نادي به أينشتين، وهو موضوع يشير إليه مختلف الكتاب في مختلف الدول مع زيادة ترديد ذكره اليوم.
ويتناول الفصلان الرابع والخامس تأثير العلوم الحديثة التي اكتشفت مختلف مظاهر الإنسان ذاته (في مقدمتها علم الأحياء، والفسيولوجي، والفسيولوجيا النفسية الخ...)، ,أثرها على الكتاب في مختلف الدول وردود فعلها المختلفة بالنسبة لاكتشافات علمية معينة، ويعتبر الفصل الخامس وعنوانه "محنة الذاتية" هو موضوع الساعة في الأدب الغربي، والمشاكل التي يعالجها الفصل الخامس تقودنا مباشرة إلى الفصل السادس الذي يتناول الموضوعات التي تدور حول اضطرابات الشخصية والتي تحتل دائماً أكبر رقعة في الأدب الغربي.
أما الفصل السابع (والأخير)، فيناقش التغيرات التي طرأت على الصورة الفنية للشخصية الإنسانية تحت تأثير زيادة تعرف العلم على العمليات السيكولوجية للشعور واللاشعور.
