كانت باريس القرن التاسع عشر حقلًا خصبًا للعزوبية ومُمارسة الدعارة، ومليئة بالمقاهي أماكن الليل والمسارح، وكان التمثيل في ذلك الوقت مرتبطًا ارتباطًا شديدًا بالدعارة، وهو ما دفع مأمور شرطة باريس أن يتلاعب بالعاهرات على اختلافهن من بيوت الدعارة المُرخّصة، وكذلك اللواتي يُمارسن الدعارة السرية، وحسب كاتسارو كان البرجوازيون يُصّنفون العاهرات والعُزّاب باعتبارهم مصابين ب"الجذام الأخلاقي"، فكانوا مرفوضين ومهُمّشين، فاعتبروا مصيرهم محُددًا ب"المرض، والشقاء، أو الموت المبكر". وبينما كان الجميع يلعنه، كان الأعزب يُمارس حقه، ويتمتع بحُريته في أن يُلقي أقوال البرجوازية خلف ظهره، وشكّلت شريكته العاهرة استفزازًا للطبقة البرجوازية في الوقت ذاته، حيث وصِفت بأنها تصنع من جسدها مادة فنية مستفزة وبربرية "وهو ما يتناقض مع رتابة الملابس السوداء الاعتيادية والفساتين الرقيقة"، في الوقت الذي كان فيه الشباب البرجوازيون يذهبون إلى العاهرات للتدرب على الجنس قبل الزواج.
