ولد "موهنداش كارمشاندا" (المهاتما) غاندي في 2 تشرين الأول 1899 في بورناندار غرب الهند، وعاش حتى الثامنة والسبعين، وهي سن موغلة في الشيخوخة في بلاد تقول الإحصاءات الرسمية: إن متوسط العمر فيها 27 عاماً. وحتى مع ذلك فإن غاندي لم يمت لأسباب طبيعية. كان في طريقه لعقد اجتماع للصلاة في نيودلهي عندما أطلق عليه شاب هندوسي متعصب النار فقتله يوم كانون الثاني 1948.
وقيل ذلك بأقل من خمسة شهور كان المهاتما قد أحرز نصراً شخصياً عظيماً عندما أعلن الإنكليز أن الهند أصبحت دولة مستقلة. ولكن كيف استطاع غاندي أن يحرز للهند هذا الاستقلال؟ وكيف كانت الأوضاع السياسية قبل ظهوره وما هي الحركة التي ارتبط اسمه بها وما هو النهج النضالي الذي سار عليه وقيل كل ذلك من هو غاندي؟ هذا ما تجيب عنه هذه الدراسة التي بين أيدينا والتي تضم بين طياتها حديثاً شيقاً على تجربة عظمى قام بها رجل فرض نفسه كممثل للشخصية الهندية، وممثل لتحقيق تطلعات شعوب الهند.
