كان المصنف الشهاب الحجازي أدبياً بارعاً في فنون شتى من فنون المعرفة، ولكنه توفر على الأدب فكان له نثر وشعر يغلب عليها التكلف وطلب التورية، وقد كانت توريات بعيدة في بعض الأحيان، وأكثر شعره الغزل، وله رثاء وكان في عزله شيء المجون وقد جمع هذا الكتاب شيئاً من شعره في الجواري الحسان وألحقه بما رثى به الحسان لأنه، كان يقول المصنف، آخر ما يؤول إليه الإنسان، وسماه الكنس الجواري في الحسان من الحواري، وقد ذيل المحقق هذا الكتاب بما نظمه المصنف في حسان الغلمان، وجاء هذا المصنف محققاً حيث تركز عمل المحققّ في التصحيح والتصويب والتعليق على ما جاء في هذا المصنف، كما عمد أيضاً إلى التصرف بعض الشيء في مواضيع عدة أشار إليها في متن الكتاب.
