كتاب تاريخ بيروت لمؤلفه "صالح بن يحيى" في مؤرخي أواسط القرن التاسع للهجرة يقدم للمكتبة العربية ذخراً قيّماً في مجال المعلومات المتوافرة عن وقائع وأحداث عصر الصليبيين في بيروت خاصة وفي سائر أقسام المنطقة بشكل عام. ويلفت النظر فيما كتب صالح بن يحيى ما قدم من تفاصيل عن الحوادث التي جرت في بيروت وعن قدم هذه المدينة وآثارها وعن ما مر عليها من تغيرات وطوارئ منذ القرن السادس للهجرة إلى القرن التاسع.
ومن خلال كل ذلك يطلع القارئ على أوضاع وأحوال الصليبيين الذين سكنوا بيروت وما قاموا به من أعمال وغزوات في سواحل بيروت وجوارها. ويظهر من كلامه وشروحه أنه كان ينشد الحقيقة التاريخية فلا يروي شيئاً إلا شفعه بالحجج والأسانيد التي يقدمها بغزارة وكثيراً ما يلجأ إلى ذكر ما شاهده بأم عينه. هذا ما يثبت من أمور كثيرة وردت في هذا الكتاب لا يستطيع إظهارها إلا شاهد عيان عاش الأحداث وخير تفاصيلها ولكي نتبين منزلة هذا المؤلف في عصره لا بد من الإشارة إلى ما قال عنه ابن بساط من أنه الأمير الكبير والعالم المشهور بعلمه والفراسة (كذا) صاحب العزم والحزم وهو الذي فاق زمانه وفاق أقرانه وقد جمع العلوم في معرفة الكواكب والنجوم والإسطرلاب ونظم الشعر وترتيب التواريخ وقد كتب تاريخ بيت تنوخ وهو صاحب الغزوات وقد حضر فتوح قبرص سنة 828 هـ (1425) ولم يذكر ابن بساط سنة وفاته".
