ولم يعد المختصون يبحثون عن مبررات كما كانوا يفعلون في الماضي لنيل التأييد لبحوثهم الحضرية التي كانت تصطدم بمعارضة المحافظين من أقرانهم؛ إذ يركز الباحثون الأنثروبولوجيون الحضريون على الوسائل والسبل التي من شأنها تذليل الصعوبات في بحث ظواهر الواقع الحضري بدلاً من الجدل حول ما إذا كان هذا الصنف أو ذاك من البحث أكثر ملاءمة لعلم الإنسان.
فلم تعد المواقف المعارضة للدراسات الحصرية تلقى تأييدا يذكر اليوم بالنظر إلى إجماع الأنثروبولوجيين على أن مشكلات الريف والمدن في العالم الثالث لا تقبل الفصل بحكم تنامي التداخل والإرتباط بين هذين العالمين المتكافلين.
إن معظم مدن العالم الثالث لما تتسم به من قوة الأعراف القبلية وأطرزة الحياة القروية تطرح نماذج متباينة تماماً عن نماذج المدن الغربية وهذا يستوجب إيجاد مناهج بحث وأطر تنظير تناسبها بصورة فيها قدر من الإستقلال العلمي بدلاً من المحاكاة والتقليد الذي لا يراعي هذه الفروق.
إن الهدف الذي يرمي إليه هذا الكتاب متشعب من النواحي النظرية والمعرفية والمنهجية والتنموية، فهو إضافة إلى كونه يزود القارئ المختص وغير المختص بالمعلومات التي تكشف عن بعض تعقيدات عملية التمدن والتحضر كما تجري حالياً فإنه أيضاً يثير كثيراً من التساؤلات والإشكاليات ويطرح وجهات نظر مختلفة عنها دون محاباة رأي محدد.
