لأن البيئة أمانة يسلمها جيل إلى جيل ليتفاعل معها ويصونها ويحميها بل وينميها بما ينفع أجيال عديدة تالية لأن لسان حال واقعنا - العالمي- يجيب: اننا نعيش الآن وبحق ما يمكن تسميته "أزمة بيئية"، فإنه لا مناص للخروج منها إلا بتربية الإنسان تربية بيئية راشدة، ومن هنا كانت ضرورة إعداد مثل هذا الكتاب الذي يسهم في تناول كل ما تقدم بصورة شاملة من جهة كما يسد نقصاً حقيقياً تعانيه المكتبة العربية.
وإذا كانت التربية البيئية قد أضحت في الوقت الحاضر ضرورة ملحة، فإن الكتاب يستهل في فصله الأول بالحديث عن التربية البيئية: حتميتها، ومفهومها، وأهدافها ولما كانت هناك ضرورة لتقديم تصور لنموذج يتفق عليه للتربية البيئية، فقد اقترح المؤلف هذا النموذج في الفصل الثاني: التربية البيئية: نموذجها، ومبادئ تحقيقها، وفي محاولة التحقيق، تناول الكتاب كيفية معالجة أهم المقاهيم الكبرى للتربية البيئية في فصوله من الثالث إلى السادس، وإذا كانت تلك الفصول الأربعة، من الثالث إلى السادس، تعالج الجوانب المعرفية للتربية البيئية، فإن الفصل السابع يختص بالجوانب المهارية منها، ويتناول الفصل التاسع وسيلة هامة وسلاحاً نافذاً لتحقيق أهداف التربية البيئية، ونعني به المواجهات البيئية، ويختتم الكتاب بالفصل العاشر: تقويم التعلم في التربية البيئية، وقد عرض هذا الفصل لمجموعة كبيرة من الدراسات في مجال التربية البيئية بصفة عامة والاتجاهات البيئية بصفة خاصة.
