برغم ارتفاع أسعار الطاقة في الوقت الذي يسعى فيه الإنتاج ليواكب السوق بما أن الكثير من الحقول القائمة بدأت في الاضمحلال، واصبح الاحتياطي الجديد أكثر ندرة واستغلاله يزداد صعوبة، فإن الاحتياجات العالمية للطاقة آخذة في الارتفاع. وفي وضع هذا الإمداد المتزايد التراجع يشهد العالم سباقاً ثلاثياً بين الولايات المتحدة الأميركية والصين والهند لتأمين امدادات الطاقة في المستقبل. وربما تتجاوز الصين الولايات المتحدة الأميركية، وهي أكبر مستهلك ومستورد للطاقة في العالم، في العقود القادمة مع بحثها عن الامدادات الجديدة لتغذية نموها الهائل. أما الهند، ومع عدد سكانها المتنامي، فهي مهيأة أيضاً للتطور الاقتصادي المتسارع، وستظل تعتمد بشدة على واردات الطاقة لردم الفجوة المتسعة بين الإنتاج الداخلي المتواضع والطلب المتصاعد. ومع انتقال الجاذبية الاقتصادية العالمية إلى آسيا، فإن الخليج العربي سوف يظل مصدر معظم واردات القارة من النفط.
