هذه التساؤلات وغيرها هي ما جعلت مؤلف الكتاب الأستاذ هارون رشيد إلى وضع "بحث موجز في معاني المصطلحات الدارجة وأصولها، قدم له بمقدمة تحدث فيها حركة اللغة ونموها وتطورها، مؤكداً أن الألفاظ العامية أو ما يسمى بــ "اللغة الجديدة" في كثير من مفرداتها كما يتضح في هذا الكتاب - ليست حديثة النشأة، ولكنها قد تكون اكتسبت دلالة جديدة في رحلتها عبر البيئات الإجتماعية المختلفة على مرّ الزمان، وفي بعض الأحيان سنلحظ - يقول المؤلف - كيف يحافظ المصطلح على معناه لكنه يقوم بإحداث تغيير في النسق الترتيبي لأبجديته فيقدم ويؤخر أو يقلب ويستبدل وهكذا مثلاً نسمع "سلعوة" على ألسنة المصريين بينما هي "سعلوة" في العراق ونجد.
وهكذا يأتي هذا الكتاب محاولة لإستكشاف أصول بعض الكلمات والألفاظ الدراجة في البيئات العربية والأكثر تداولاً بين الشرائح العمرية الشابة، معتمداً على مصادر لغوية في هذا الحقل، وأخرى شعرية ونثرية مقارنة بغيرها من الألفاظ، فجاء غنياً في مادته، يجد فيه المهتم طلبته، ويشبع نهمه للمعرفة، ويجد فيه أيضاً المتعة الأولى والمُلحة والفائدة.
