يعدّ التعصب ظاهرة مركبة متنوعة الأسباب والأوجه، فله أسباب اجتماعية، وسياسية، ونفسية، وهو ظاهرة عامة، عرفتها التيارات الفكرية المختلفة في حقب التاريخ كلها، مع التباين في أسبابها وأنماطها وصورها، حيث تختلف مكونات التعصب وطرق ممارسته.
ويبدو أن الاهتمام ببحوث التوجهات التعصبية نحو الجماعات والقوميات الأخرى قد بدأ منذ العشرينيات من القرن العشرين على يد بوجاردس، وقياسه للمسافات الاجتماعية التي يرتضيها الشخص بينه وبين أعضاء القوميات الأخرى ابتداءً من المصاهرة وانتهاءً إلى زيارة البلد أو الطرد منه.
وتنبع أهمية الدراسة التي بين أيدينا، والتي تحاول الكشف عن ماهية هذه الظاهرة ومكوناتها الفكرية والنفسية ووسائل تنميتها، فضلاً على تسليط الضوء على المهمة التي يؤديها التعصب في صياغة الشخصية اليهودية المتعصبة وتكوينها وتقصي الأثر الذي تركته ظاهرة التعصب بعد قيام الكيان الإسرائيلي على المستويين الداخلي والخارجي، وهذا كان واضحا ً في الاستنتاج العالمي له على الصعيد القانوني والفكري، والذي توج باستصدار قرار الجمعية العامة للأمم المتحدة ذي الرقم 3379 عام 1975م.
