قليلون هم الذين حظوا بالفرصة التي أتيحت للشيخ الباقوري، للمشاركة في صنع الأحداث في بلادهم. ففي مطلع شبابه، لعب دورًا بارزًا في ثورة الأزهر والأزهريين مما جر عليه السجن والفصل والتشريد. ثم انخرط في حركة الإخوان المسلمين، واحتل فيها مكانًا أثيرًا لدى مؤسسها وقائدها المرحوم حسن البنا، حتى أنه عهد إليه بأمر الجماعة عندما أحس بأنه محاصر. وعندما تفجرت ثورة يوليو وتولى الوزارة فيها، لعب دورًا مؤثرًا في التمكين لها في الداخل والخارج، مما جعله من أقرب المقربين لعبد الناصر.
وفي كتابه "بقايا ذكريات"، يروي الباقوري أسرار وملابسات مشاركته في هذه الحركات الثلاث، ويقف في هذا عند عام 1964. وقد رأينا نشرها كما هي، دون أي محاولة لاستكمال ما عرض للمؤلف من أحداث حتى وفاته في أغسطس 1985، فذلك أقرب للحفاظ على أمانة العمل وأصالته.
