اعتبر النقاد قصة (في المستشفى) تشخيصاً دقيقاً لحالة روسيا في مرحلة التسعينات .وتعبيراً دقيقاً عن حالةالانهيار العام الذي ساد في فترة حكم بوريس يلتسين ومجموعة الليبرالين (المتأمركين) الذين سيطروا على الكرميلن آنذاك.وأمعنوا في بيع ممتلكات الدولة للشركات الأجنبية .وتعامل القراء مع هذه القصة كأيقونة إنسانية تجمع بين الديني والقومي في فكر فالنتين راسبوتين الذي يختلف كثيراُ عن الكاتب والمفكر الروسي.صاحب نوبل .ألكسندر سولجنيتسين في فكرة الخارج والداخل .فمؤلف (في المستشفى) يفضل العمل في الداخل .والمواجهة على الأرض .محل الخلاف .وظلت هذه النقطة تمثل خلافاً واضحاً بينه وبين سولجنيتسين لسنوات طويلة.
القصة في مجملها واحدة من أهم ما كتب راسبوتين في السنوات الأخيرة على الرغم من النبرة العالية التي رآها البعض نوعاً من الجنوح القومي الروسى .وحتى إن كانت هذه النبرة واضحة بدرجة أو بأخرى .فهي تعكس مدى الأسى لدى الكاتب الذي عاش .ومازال يعيش .حياة ممتلئة.
