لقد نشب الحريق، كما يبدو من الزاوية، أو من جانب خلف الزاوية، التي تتوزع منها المستودعات على الجانبين: المستودعات الغذائية في الجانب الطويل والمستودعات الصناعية في الجانب القصير، كانت المستودعات على هذا الجانب أو ذاك، مترابطة، متصلة فيما بينها.
وقد شيدت المستودعات على نحو، وكانت واقعة، بحيث إذا ما نشب حريق في قسم منها، احترقت بكاملها دون بقايا، أما قبل أن تبنى، قبل ذلك، أما أن يفكر الإنسان الروسي، منذ البداية، بتوقع النار والحريق، فهو كان، دائماً لا يدرك الأمور في وقتها المناسب، وكان ينظم أموره دائماً، بحيث يكون من السهل عليه أن يعيش ويستمتع بصورة مناسبة، دون أن يفكر بكيفية المغادرة، وكيف ينقذ نفسه بأفضل وجه وأسهل شكل.
وهنا، عندما شيدت البلدة على عجل، لم يفكروا طويلاً، وهل يفكر الهارب من الماء بالنار؟...
إن قلب القارئ ينفطر عندما يقرأ هذه الرواية، وفي الوقت نفسه، ورغم إرادته، تسيطر عليه مشاعر فرحة جمالية، لأن سخط المؤلف وحبه وأفكاره، وتأملاته حول عالمنا تتجسد في فن الكلمة المبدعة.
ومن هذه الزاوية، فإن راسبوتين يحب أبطاله كلهم، حتى أولئك الذين لا وجود عندهم لأي شيء مقدس، مثل بتروخا في قصة "وداعاً يا ماتيورا" و"المرتزق" ساشكا ديفياتي في (الحريق)، رئيس فرقة المال الموسميين، الذين زرعوا من حولهم الفساد والخراب.
