رغم كثرة الكتب التي قدمت حول دور الولايات المتحدة في الشرق الأوسط إلا أن هذا الكتاب يعرض بشكل فريد لجانب لم يحظ، حسب المؤلف، بالكثير من الإهتمام ألا وهو أبعاد هذا الدور في تشجيع وتمويل نمو قوى التشدد الإسلامي على النحو الذي وصلت إلى ما هي عليه من خطر وفق المنظور الغربي. ولعل هذه الفرضية تصدم الكثيرين ممن يقوم تصورهم على وجود علاقة عداء بين الولايات المتحدة والإسلام أو الحركات الإسلامية بمعنى أصح الأمر الذي يقوم المؤلف على تفسيره بأن ذلك جاء في إطار سعى الإدارات الأمريكية المتعاقبة أياً كانت، لتحقيق مصالحها القومية.
وعلى ذلك نتابع مع المؤلف ما يعتبره أبعاد الدعم الأمريكي لحركة الإخوان المسلمين في مصر خلال الخمسينات، وكذلك دور واشنطن في دعم رجال الدين في إيران على النحو الذي انتهى بهم إلى الإطاحة بالشاه حليف أمريكا الأساسي، وحركات الجهاد في أفغانستان الأمر الذي انتهى بظهور بن لادن وتنظيم القاعدة. ورغم أن المؤلف يقدم صورة بالغة السلبية للإسلام السياسي دون أن يرى فيه أية ميزة، إلا أنه يعتمد إلى التأكيد على التمييز بين الإسلام كدين يحظى في بعض تناوله له بقدر من الثناء، وبين الحركات التي أعلنت إنتسابها له. غير أن المؤلف يقدم أطروحات أخرى بالغة الموضوعية لا نبالغ إذا قلنا أن الكثيرين في عالمنا الإسلامي لا يصل إليها في نقده لمسار السياسة الأمريكية.
