في روايته "طيور إثيوبيا" يرصد علي الشدوي مرحلة الحرب الأهلية في أثيوبيا من موقع الروائي الذي يختار من التاريخ ما يشكّل إطاراً أو خلفية لمشهده الروائي، ذاك الذي يختزله قصة البطل "فارح نور" الذي يعهد إليه الروائي بمهمة الروي، حيث يبدأ بسرد حكايته: "لم تكن الحرب عند فارح نور الجامعي؛ خريج قسم الفلسفة من جامعة الفاتح الذي أرغمته الحرب على أن يعمل سائقاً، سوى جروح عميقة لا تشبه ما يتحدث عنه الناس الذين لم يعيشوها ...". وفي هذا الإطار يتتبع الروائي حياة اللاجئين والعقبات التي تنتظرهم في عبورهم الحدود أثناء الحروب فيقول في أحد مشاهده: "إذا كان الوطن يساعد الإنسان على أن يكون نفسه، فإن اللاجئين لا يشبهون أنفسهم. يعيش اللاجئون أزمنة جديدة، ويستقرون في أمكنة جديدة، ويتكيّفون مع أمزجة جديدة. يعيد الزمان والمكان والمزاج تكوين اللاجئين. ليس اللاجئون ما كانوا في أوطانهم؛ إنما ما تحولوا إليه ...".
وبين الرحيل والغربة والتنقل، يغطي الروائي تحولات كثيرة، على المستويين العام والخاص، فتحضر في الرواية علاقات الحب، فتؤكد انتصار الحب على الحرب، وتحضر ثقافة بلدان (غرب – شرق) وقضية "الهجرة"، وغيرها من مشكلات ترافق الكائن الحي في رحلة عبوره في الحياة، فيشكل العام خلفية للروي بمعنى معادلٍ روائياً، لحياة معيشة، لكنها مع ذلك لا تقدم في أن تقدم جزءاً من حكاية شخصية / سيرتها، في زمن معين وأمكنة محددة، حيث صعوبة التكيف مع الواقع الجديد، والنكوص إلى الماضي على الرغم من قسوته، ولعل هذا ما يميز نص علي الشدوي بنزوعه نحو قيم إنسانية أصيلة يحملها المهاجر معه أينما ذهب، وكل ذلك في إطار سردي فائق التعبير، فيحقق بذلك غاية الأدب.
