في "جمهرة أشعار العرب" وهي تسع وأربعون قصيدة تمثل بإجماع القدامى والمحدثين أرقى مراتب الشعر الجاهلي من حيث صحة الرواية وصدق التمثيل ووفرة الحظ من الحفظ والعناية. وقد صنف أصحاب هذه المعلقات لإلقاء الضوء على مكانتهم وسبب تقدمهم أحدهم على الآخر والحجة في مثل هذا التقديم أو التأخير.
وبالنظر لأهمية هذه المعلقات فقد اهتم "سمير شمس" بتحقيق متنها حيث اعتنى أولاً: بضبط المعلقات ضبطاً كاملاً، وقارن بينها وبين ما ورد في المراجع والمصادر. وحافظ على النص الوارد في شرح التريزي دون تغيير. ثانياً: علق على شرح التبريزي، وشرح المفردات التي لم تعد مستعملة، أو العويصة على الفهم. واستخراج بعذ جذور المفردات وصوبها لمزيد من الإيضاح للقارئ. ثالثاً: خرج الآيات القرآنية والأحاديث الشريفة الواردة في الشرح. رابعاً: وضع بحور الأبيات الواردة في المتن والشرح. ونسبها إلى قائليها وحدد مراجعها. خامساً: عرف الأماكن والبلدان، والأعلام الواردة في النص.
