الإمام عماد الدين أبو الغداء إسماعيل بن عمر بن كثير قرشي النسب دمشقي الدار، كان مقرئاً متقناً وراوية للحديث موثوقاً، كما كان مفسراً ومؤرخاً معروفاً. وهذا النفس الموسوعي هو الذي نجده في كتابه الموسوم "البداية والنهاية".
وفيه يؤرخ الإمام ابن كثير للدول الإسلامية حتى زمانه، وهو يقسم مصنفه الكبير إلى ثلاثة أقسام: الأول: يورد فيه بدء الخليقة ولمعاً من تواريخ الأمم الغابرة متى يبلغه العرب في الجاهلية، ونشأة الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم، ثم الوحي وظهور هداية الإسلام حتى الهجرة إلى مدينة الرسول. وهو في هذا القسم يعتمد على القرآن الكريم والسنة الشريفة، ومن تقدمه من كبار المؤرخين كالطيري وابن عمر والواقدي، وعلى أصحاب السير، والثاني: يؤرخ فيه للعهد الراشدي فالدولة الأموية، فالعباسية، وما تفرغ عنها من ممالك ودولات أيام انحطاطها وتدهورها، وإلى ما بعد أن قضى عليها المغول وحتى وفاته سنة 774هـ.أما الثالث: فهو ذكر للآخرة. ومظاهر قروب الساعة وعلاماتها ووعظ ديني بمخافة الله، وجعل ذلك في المجلد الأخير فقط.
يعتبر كتاب البداية والنهاية من أهم المراجع التاريخية وقد ابتدأ فيه مصنفه من خلق السماوات والأرض وما فيهن إلى القرن الثامن الهجري معتمدا في الأحداث التي قبل النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم على الآيات والأحاديث والروايات المسندة الأخرى. وأما ما بعد البعثة فهو يتكلم على كل سنة على حدة، وما مر فيها من أمور وأحداث مهمة بشكل مشبع ومفصل. وهذه طبعة منقحة وموثقة ومقارنة بمخطوطات أخرى ومخرجة الآيات وعليها حواشٍ في شرح المبهمات والمصطلحات القديمة
