أحدث الإهتمام بتاريخ العلم، من قبل مؤرخي وفلاسفة العلم المعاصرين، تغييراً في نظرتنا إلى العلم وفلسفته وتاريخه، فإذا كان تاريخ العلم قد أمد فلاسفة العلم بالعديد من المشكلات التي عملوا على حلها؛ وإذا كان من الطبيعي أن يلجأ فلاسفة العلم مرة أخرى إلى تاريخ العلم بحثاً عن الحلول، فإن هذا لم يمنع فلاسفة العلم المعاصرين من طرح قضايا وإشكاليات تتعلق بمنهجية التأريخ للعلم ذاته.
وهذا ما دفع العديد من مؤرخي العلم المعاصرين إلى إعادة النظر في منهجية التأريخ للعلم العربي في الحضارة الإسلامية وطرح القضايا والإشكاليات المعرفية النظرية التي أثيرت أثناء تطور العلم العربي، وذلك للكشف عن فلسفة تاريخ العلم العربي، منطلقين من منهج تأريخي يعطي إهتماماً للدور الذي لعبه السياق النظري / المعرفي من جهة والإجتماعي / السياسي / الثقافي من جهة أخرى في تقدم العلم العربي وأيضاً في إنحساره وتراجعه.
واليوم أجد لزاماً على أن أضع أمام القارئ الكريم كتاباً يتناول فلسفة تاريخ العلم العربي، كما قدمها عبد الحميد صبره ومنهجيته في التأريخ للعلم العربي لكي تتعرف الأجيال الجديدة من الباحثين على أن أول سبيل للتقدم العلمي الذي ننشده في مجتمعاتنا التي تأن تحت وطأة تراجع وإنحسار المعرفة العلمية، هو الوعي بتاريخ العلم العربي وفق منهجية علمية رصينة بعيدة عن التغني بأمجاد الماضي أو تهميش هذا الماضي لأغراض أيديولوجية ليست بالبريئة.
