يعتبر "ثبت عبد الحي بن العماد الحنبلي" من أهم مصنفات التاريخ العربي الإسلامي المختصرة، حيث أرّخ فيه إبن العماد ما ثبت له روايته من كتب الحديث، وما اتصل سنده به من أسفار جهابذة هذا الفن في القديم والحديث، وما وقع له في مَسْطورِ إجازة وثبت، وما صح به إلى مؤلفه وثبت، من كتب حديث وفقه وتفسير، وفرائض وآلات وإنشاء وتحرير. وبكلام آخر هو: الحديث المسلسل بالأولية والذي جمعه مؤلفه – كما صرّح بذلك – من كتب الحافظ الذهبي وغيره من المؤلفات والتحريرات ككتابه في مذهب الحنابلة "بغية أولي النُّهي في شرح غاية المنتهى" وغيره.
ولأهمية هذا الكتاب دأب الأستاذ محمد بن ناصر العجمي إلى تحقيقه، وتخريج أحاديثه، وترجم للمصنف، وعزا الأحاديث إلى المصادر التي ذكرها إليه ووزعه على عناوين منها: الحديث المسلسل بالمعمرين، والمسلسل بالحنفية، والمسلسل بالمالكية، والمسلسل بالشافعية، والمسلسل بالحنابلة، والمسلسل بالشاميين الدمشقيين الثقات والمسلسل بالمصريين. وهكذا أتم الحديث المسلسل بالأولية، وذيّله بمختصر ثبت إمام المحنابلة في عصره عبد الباقي البعلي الدمشقي وما ورد عنه من أحدايث نقلها عن: سند صحيح مسلم، وسنن الترمذي، وسنن إبن ماجة وغيرهم ...
