قسم المؤرخون وعلماء الإجتماع تاريخ حياة النساء إلى ثلاث فترات، "الفترة الأولى" والتي قد انتهت رسمياً فيما خلا بعض الأماكن النائيّة من العالم، وخاصّة في بعض القبائل الأفريقيّة، تُعتَبرُ المرأة فيها كـ"متاع"، ليس لها أيّ مكانة وإحترام.
في "الفترة الثانيّة" ارتفعت مكانة المرأة، لينظر إليها كمّجرد كائن حيّ، كائن يؤدّي دوره تحت سلطة رجال القبيلة والمجتمعات البدائيّة؛ في "الفترة الثالثة" والتي هي اليوم دائرة بأشكال مختلفة في المجتمعات غير الإسلاميّة، أصبحت المرأة، محطّ إهتمام الشركات التجاريّة وأصحاب رؤوس الأموال، فينظر إليها من جهة كسلعة تجارية وإعلانية.
سوف تكون الأفكار الغربيّة، في هذه المقالة التحقيقيّة حول حقوق وحريّة النساء في الإسلام، مورد بحث وتحليل، وعلّة إختيار الغرب للمقارنة مع الإسلام فيما يخصّ حقوق المرأة، هو أنّ الإسلام في دنيا اليوم، كأكمل وآخر دين إلهي، يقع في أعلى مراتب الدفاع عن حقوق وحريّات النساء من جهة، ويقع من جهة ثانيّة في مقابلة عالم الكفر والشّرك والنفاق بزعامة الغرب في موضع القيادة للنظرة إلى المرأة كسلعة وحيوان، وحتى البلدان الإشتراكيّة والشيوعيّة فهي أيضاً سائرة تحت رايّة الفكر العربي في هذا المجال.
والهدف من هذه المقارنة هو الإثبات التفصيلي لعقلانيّة وحقّانيّة نظرة الإسلام في ما يتعلق بحقوق وحريّات النساء، ونقد الأفكار الغربيّة وإبطالها في هذا المجال.
