تقول كارين أرمسترونغ في كتابها (محمد محاولة غريبة في فهم الإسلام):"على النساء الغربيات من دعاة حقوق المرأة واللواتي يتهجمن على الإسلام وتتهمنه بدعوى أنه يحط من شأن النساء، عليهن أن يعلمن أن الإسلام ونبيه محمد أعطى النساء حقوقاً ظلّ الغرب ينتظر حتى نهاية القرن التاسع عشر ليحصل على مثلها، وأن علماء المسيحية لاموا الإسلام على ما أعطاه للنساء والعبيد من حقوق" ومؤلفة هذا الكتاب، رفعت حسان، الباكستانية الأصل تنطلق مع هذه المقولة، أي إن الإسلام يعطي النساء حقوق كثيرة وعلى قدم المساواة مع الرجل. وتعد وفي تقديم حججها بالدرجة الأولى إلى المرجع الأول في الإسلام، أي القرآن، وتحاول من خلال الرد على التهجمات الغربية وبعض المسلمين المحجرين، إظهار المكانة الرفيعة للمرأة في الإسلام. وهي تدعو النساء المسلمات إلى البحث والتحري بأنفسهن عن مكانتهن في دينهن (الإسلام) لأن الحيف الذي لحق بهن تحت اسم الإسلام جاء لسبب تخليهن عن مهمة البحث والمتابعة وإيكال تعيين موقعهن إلى الرجال. والكاتبة عضوة نشيطة في المؤتمرات الدولية حول حقوق المرأة وجعلتها دراستها المركّزة للنص القرآني على مدى عشر سنين، تدرك الفجوة بين ما أراده القرآن وبين ما يحدث لهن بين الحين والآخر في بعض المراحل المختلفة، وهي تقوم في عملها هذا قراءات جديدة.
