نمط جديد من الكتب والتأليف في الخيل يخرج الى المكتبة العربية بعد أن طال حبسه في دهاليز المخطوطات العربية المحفوظة في مكتبات العالم شرقاً وغرباً، يتحدث عن الخيل مفصلاً أجزاء الفرس جزءاً جزءاً، مع وصف دقيق ومسهب لكل جزء وما يعتريه من علل وأمراض، وكيفية تضمير الخيل وتجهيزها للسباق، وتعريقها وقيادتها وإنعالها والقتال عليها، وهو كما وصفه: فيه من فنون الفروسية والمعرفة بأحوال الخيل وخواصها وعيوبها وعللها، والمولود منها بعيب، والحادث منها بعيب، وأسماء عللها وأدويتها ورياضتها، وفنون معاناتها، وتدريب الفارس عليها، وتعليم الفروسية أولاً بأول، وقد جمع في هذا الكتاب ما يغني عن جميع الكتب المصنفة في هذا الفن، وهو في تبطرة البهائم يوازي كتاب الصناعة لجالينوس في طب البشر.
وقد وصفه المستشرق السويدي أولمان: هذا كتاب في الخيل لم يؤلف مثله.
