علم التاريخ شأنه شأن جميع العلوم ظل محتاجاً غلى فلسفة رغم استقلاله عنها. وفد توسع الغربيون في دراسة فلسفة التاريخ لأنها تلبي للفكر الغربي حاجة ملحة، واحتياج التاريخ إلى الفلسفة يكمن في شقين: الأول يتعلق بالناحية المنهجية، والثاني يتعلق بالقصور الحاصل لدى الكثيرين في فهم طبيعة التاريخ. وكتاب في فلسفة التاريخ يقع في جزءين. الجزء يتألف من ثلاثة أبواب، يبحث الباب الأول في نشأة المنهج التاريخي وتطوره حيث يلقي الضوء على الخلاف بين الوضعيين والمثاليين أما الباب الثاني فقد كرسه لدراسة عملية صنع التاريخ الذي من صنع الحضارات وهو الصورة الفكرية للحضارة ينشرها للناس مقدماً لها الحساب عن نشاط الفكر الإنساني في ماضيه. ويركز الباب الثالث على حكم التاريخ إذ يعتبر المؤلف أن القول بحكم التاريخ لا يخلو من تناقض.
أما الجزء الثاني من الكتاب فهو في فلسفة التاريخ ويقع في بابين يجيب الباب الأول عن سؤال طالما يشغل الباحثين وهو: ما الذي يحدد مسار التاريخ؟ فعلى حين يرى ابن خلدون وفيكو أن مسار التاريخ عجلة دائرة تخضع للحتمية فتتعاقب الحضارات على الدول تعاقباً دورياً بين نشأة وازدهار وانحطاط يرى آخرون أن التاريخ مظهر للعناية الإلهية وتعبير عن تخطيط إلهي محكم. وقد اختار المؤلف من نظريات فلسفة التاريخ ما هو أكثر أهمية فعرض لنظرية التعاقب الدوري للحضارات ونظرية العناية ونظرية التقدم. وعالج في الباب الثاني أبعاد فلسفة التاريخ عارضاً للبعد الميتافيزيقي لدى هيجل وكذلك البعد الاقتصادي لدى ماركس وانجلز كما لم يغفل البعد البيولوجي لدى شبنجلر والبعد الحضاري لدى توينبي.
