ظل الموريتانيون قديماً وحديثاً أثناء احتكاكهم بأشقائهم العرب يواجهون سلسلة من الأسئلة المحرجة: ما هي موريتانيا؟ وأين تقع، وما هو دورها الحضاري والثقافي؟
وعلى الرغم من إعلان استقلال البلاد السياسي في 28 تشرين الثاني/ نوفمبر 1960 واحتلالها مكانتها في المحافل الدولية، إلا أن مثل هذه الأسئلة المحرجة لا تزال تطرح وتثير حساسية شديدة.
وذلك ما دفع بمجموعة من الباحثين في منتدى الفكر والحوار في نواكشوط للتفكير في محاولة للإجابة عن هذه الأسئلة بإعداد وإصدار كتاب جديد للتعريف بموريتانيا. وقد جهدوا لأن يكون عرضهم موجزاً وموضوعياً عبر توخي التوثيق والالتزام بالحقيقة، وإيجابياً عبر التركيز على تراكم التجارب لبلد لا يزال يعيش مرحلة البناء المؤسسي لكيانه.
