هذا كتاب نادر وضعه باحث أميركي مدقق، هوجون فريدريك وليمسن أستاذ الآداب في جامعة أنديانا بالولايات المتحدة وتناول فيه تاريخ قبيلة شمر ومكانتها وموقعها السياسي منذ نزوحها إلى منطقة الجزيرة في شمال العراق سنة 1800 حتى إنقلاب 14 تموز 1958. وشمر من قبائل العراق الكبرى، وهي قبيلة قحطانية، وبيت الرئاسة فيها لآل الجرباء، وهم آل محمد. وقد قال مؤرخ العراق عباس الغراوي أن قبيلة شمر نزحت إلى العراق سنة 1791، ثم سار شيخها مطلق إلى سورية وتوجه إلى الحج مع أحمد باشا الجزار وعاد إلى بادية العراق، وقد أصاب نفوذا عظيما. ولما كان تاريخ هذه القبيلة ملئ بالوقائع والأحداث، فقد عنى المؤلف بتتبعها بدقة مسهبا في ذكر تفاصيلها، وحسبنا أن نرجع إلى مصادر الكتاب الكثيرة لنطلع على الجهود التي بذلها الكاتب في سبيل هذا، ومنها سجلات الحكومة البريطانية وتقاريرها، وتاريخ العراق بين إحتلالين وعشائر العراق لعباس الغزاوي، وعيون الأخبار لابن قتيبة، والبداوة والبدو والقبائل الرحالة في العراق لمكي الجميل، وعشائر الشام لوصفي أحمد زكريا، فضلاً عن المراجع المتعددة باللغة الإنكليزية ورحلات الرحالين إلى العراق.
كتاب نادر وضعه الباحث الأمريكي المحقق جون فريديريك وليمسن أستاذ الآداب في جامعة انديانا عن قبيلة شمر العربية منذ نزوحها إلى العراق حتى يوم 14 تموز 1958، وهي أطروحة قدمها المؤلف إلى شعبة التأريخ في جامعة انديانا للحصول على الدكتوراه في الفلسفة.
اهتم الشيخ محسن العجيل الياور بهذا الكتاب لعلاقته بتأريخ القبيلة فضلاً عن إنه يشكل صفحة رائعة من تأريخ العراق في القرن التاسع عشر والنصف الأول من القرن العشرين، وقد نشرنا ترجمته العربية.
إنه كتاب جدير بالقراءة لأنه يمثل أهم فترة من تأريخ العراق السياسي.
