لا يمكن تجاهل ما يسهم به الأدب في الكشف عن أنماط شتى من العادات والسلوك والمسكوت عنه في الثقافة الإنسانية، ولما كان الإبداع الروائي أبرز الفنون الأدبية التي تركز على سؤال الهوية في سياقات تعتمد الصراع وغلبة القوى الأجنبية والتحولات الآنية كالعولمة وهيمنة القوى الكبرى، فقد أدى ذلك إلى تفاعل أقلام عدة مع هذا البعد، فأنتجت دراسات شتى حذرت من تلك الهيمنة التي تمارسها القوى الكبرى والنماذج المستبدة بفعل التراتب القهري، ونظرت إليها بوصفها خطرًا على الذات الثقافية وتدميرًا لتطويرها.
حاول هذه الدراسة أن تتباعد أولًا عن التذكير، تلميحًا أو تصريحًا، بأهمية الموروث أو تأكيد المخاطر التي تجسدها هيمنة القوى العظمى على الهوية، وذلك لسببين اثنين: يتصل الأول بكثرة ما تم إنجازه في هذا الشأن من الدراسات التي تناولت قضايا الهوية والهيمنة وغيرهما، ولما كانت بعض هذه الدراسات تستحق الوقوف والتأمل لجديتها، فإن الحاجة إلى تكرار مثل ذلك أمر لا يضيف جديدًا، أما السبب الآخر فيتصل بسعي هذا الإصدار إلى استثمار الجانب الإيجابي في موروثنا الثقافي بوصفه المفتاح الأقرب والأنسب لمعالجة أوضاعنا لمعرفة ما لدينا من إيجابيات تستدعي ضرورة التركيز عليها لمضاعفتها ودعمها وتفعيلها في الثقافة.
إننا نأمل أن نبث روح التفاؤل عوضًا عن التشاؤم في النظر إلى هويتنا الثقافية وأوضاعها.. ولذلك تسعى هذه الدراسة أن تجيب عن سؤالين اثنين في هذا الإطار المعرفي المتعلق بأسئلة الهوية وتمثيلاتها والتي تتمثل في سؤال: ما أهم العوامل الرئيسة الحديثة التي رسخت مفهوم الهوية في الرواية العربية؟ وكيف تجسدت صور الموروث فيها؟ ولتحقيق ذلك فقد تم التركيز على استقراء تلك النماذج وتتبعها لتكشف انعكاسات الهوية في بعض النصوص الروائية العربية المُختارة إلى جانب بعض النصوص الإضافية المتضمنة حوارات مع أولئك الروائيين في محاولة لاستقراء هذا التناول.
