يمثل الخطاب السجالي (Polemic Discourse) تاريخاً مصطلحياً ممتداً منذ البلاغة اليونانية والرومانية القديمة مروراً بالبلاغة العربية الإسلامية في العصور الوسيطة إلى البلاغة الجديدة مع الحداثة الأوروبية (الغربية) وموجات ما بعد الحداثة (Postmodernism) التي كسرت المركزية الغربيَة، وأضحت الهوامش وما يتصل بها مركزيات.
ولقد برز الخطاب السجالي في العصور التي تلت العصر العباسي نظراً إلى تنوع الحضارة العربية الإسلامية، أما في عصر الحداثة والنهضة العربية فقد كان للخطاب السجالي بروز كبير في سجالات الحداثة والتقليد التي شملت كل شيء في المجتمع العربي الحديث والمعاصر من السجالات الساسية والفكرية والثقافية، ولا غرابة في هذا البروز/ فالسجالات تزدهر في عصور الحراكات النهضوية الكبرى متناولة مفاصل جوهرية وشائكة في المجتمعات التي تفرزها أفهام متباينة وعقول تتجاذبها مؤثرات كثيرة بين الحداثة والتقليد. وقفنا في تفكيكنا للخطاب السجالي في الثقافة العربية على مفاصل سجالية بدت لنا في غاية الأهمية والتنوع، فمن التراث العربي القديم كان سجال الجرجاني مع القاضي عبد الجبَار في كتاب "دلائل الإعجاز". ومن سجالات النهضة العربية في مطلع القرن العشرين كان "خطاب المرأة: التأويل والتأويل المضاد: قراءة في استراتيجيات الخطاب السجالي لكتابي السفور والحجاب" و"الفتاة والشيوخ" لنظيرة زين الدين (1908- 1977)". ومن السجالات النقدية في مرحلة الحداثة وما بعدها كانت "آليات السجال في خطاب التقليد والحداثة في الأدب السعودي" و"آليات الخطاب السجالي في النقد العربي الحديث: النقد الثقافي وتطبيقاته العربية أنموذجاً".
لقد أردنا أن يكون هذا الكتاب المشترك في تطبيقاته النقدية محركاً وحافزاً للكتابة العربية النقدية في مجال الخطاب السجالي، الذي لا تزال الكتابة عنه عربياً في حكم القليل النادر، مقارنة بخطابات تداولية أخرى.
