السبب فى التحقيق هو أهمية هذا الشرح بالنسبة لقراء "الدرة"، من الطلاب والقراء، وحاجته إلى التحقيق، لإنتشاره بينهم، وتقريره فى معهد القراءات وفروعه بالأزهر الشريف، وكذلك فى كليه القرآن الكريم بالجامعة الإسلامية بالمدينة المنورة، وسبب انتشاره أنه أول شرح طبع لواحد من العلماء القدامى، وهو الإمام محمد بن الحسن السمنودى (ت 1199هـ). عليه سحائب الرضوان، فقد طبع للمرة الأولى فى أول شهر ربيع الأول، سنة 1342 هـ. بمطبعة الحلبى بالقاهرة.
وقد رأيت من الواجب على نحو كلية القرآن الكريم فى مصر والمدينة المنورة، وخدمة لكل من يقرأ هذا الكتاب أن أقوم بتحقيق نصه فقط بطريقة علمية، وذلك بمقابلة النسخ المطبوعة من هذا الشرح، بالإضافة إلى شروح "الدرة" التى اختصر منها المؤلف شرحه، والتى ذكرها فى مقدمته، وهى: "شرح الزبيدى"، و"النويرى"، و"الرميلى"، والحمد لله، تحقيق الغرض من هذا العمل المتواضع.
