تناول المؤلف فيه مبادئ تعليم اللغة العربية، فأفرده لقواعد النطق والكتابة، وهي مبادئ التعلم الأولى، فبدأ كتابه بالحديث عن أصوات اللغة العربية (الحروف) فذكر مخارجها، وصفاتها، ونطقها الصحيح، وقارن بينها وبين ما يشبهها من اللغات الأخرى، وبين التحريف الذي لحقها في ألسنة العامة، ثم انتقل إلى الحديث عن الكتابة، فتناول قواعد كتابة الهمزة واختلافها ومواضعها من الكلمة، وفرق بينها وبين همزة الوصل التي حقق القول فيها، وتناول المؤلف موضوعات أخرى تتعلق بالكتابة أشهرها الوصل، والوقف، والحركات، وحروف العلة، والحروف التي تتغير في الكتابة والحروف التي لا تنطق، وما بحذف، والإدغام، وتصريف الأفعال واتصال الضمائر بها، وبناء المشتقات، وعلامات الترقيم، وكلها موضوعات تتعلق بقواعد الكتابة.
