لما كانت الشخصية هي الغرض الذي ينشده الروائي، فإن الشخصية في "ضوء من بعيد" هي ذاتٌ، وموضوع، ومحور عناية الكاتب إبراهيم علي الطويل في مجموعته القصصية هذه، والتي يقدم لنا فيها شخصية "عباس" شاب حالم وبسيط، يعيش في بيئة ريفية أقصى أحلامه الحب والزواج والعمل. يتتبع الكاتب هذه الأمنيات في حياة عباس في يومياته، بدءاً من صحوته لصلاة الفجر، وانتهاءً بكل مرحلة من حياته، ملقياً الضوء على عالمه الداخلي، كاشفاً عن طباعه النفسية، بالقدر الذي يسهم فيه المنولوغ الداخلي في هذه المسألة.
أما اللغة المستخدمة في التعبير، فهي تجمع بين اللغة السائدة في الأدب، والأسلوب الخاص بالكاتب، أي الجمع بين البساطة التي تتمثل في اللغة المتداولة، لغة الحديث اليومي، والعمق، عن طريق المزج بين دلالات الكلمات والتلاعب لمواقع الألفاظ في التركيب الواحد على نحو قوله: "الحب بلوى ليتنا ما عرفناه" ... التحف لحافه وغفت عيناه وهو يتلظى بنار الحب آملاً أن يتزوجها قريباً بعد أن يجد عملاً". هذا السرد يشعر القارىء بالأثر النفسي الذي يتركه مرور الوقت والإنتظار في شخص البطل الذي يصفه الراوي. فالأشياء التي يرقبها "عباس" ، ساعة تلو الأخرى، ويوم بعد يوم، تفلت من يده بسرعة تكاد لا تلحظ، فهو والحال هذه، لا يمكن إلا أن يحسّ بشعور الخسران، والإستسلام للأمر الواقع / المعاش، ولكن يبقى في الحياة "ضوء من بعيد" يعيد الأمل.
