تؤلف العظات الثماني التي يضمها هذا الكتاب مجموع العظات التي عثر عليها الأب "أنطوان فنغر" في "دير ستافرونيكيتا" في "جبل آتوس"، سنة 1955، وكان لهذا الاكتشاف الوقع العظيم عند كل المعنيين بدراسة آثار الذهبي الفم، ولاسيما لما حمله المخطوط من جليل المعطيات بشأن لاهوت المعمودية وتقاليد الاحتفال بالسرد والإعداد له، ومنها الانخراط في سلك الموعظين وتلقن إرشادات التهيئة إبان الصوم والعزم على طرد الشياطين من النفس والتنكر لإبليس والاستعداد لقبول المسيح ونيل سر الزيت المقدس لإرعاب إبليس باسم الثالوت المقدس والحصول في ختام ذلك على مواهب المعمودية السنية.
وما من حجة تصدنا عن أن نذهب إلى أن يوحنا قد ألقى معظم هذه العظات على مسامع مؤمنيه في أنطاكية عندما عهد إليه في إرشاد الموعظين إلى الإيمان والتقوى، ويبدو ذلك بنوع خاص من العظة الثامنة التي تطالعنا على أمر الفلاحين الذين وفدوا من الريف (ريف أنطاكية)، حيث الشعب لا ينطق باليونانية، ليسمعوا كلام الذهبي الفم ويستنيروا بحكمة تعاليمه.
