في هذا الكتاب دراسة جديدة، دونها "جان دايه"، وخصّها بموضوع جريء، جريء بقلم صاحبه "الإمام الكواكبي" كما هو جريء بقلم دراسة الأستاذ "جان دايه"، إنه موضوع "الفصل بين الدين والدولة عند عبد الرحمن الكواكبي. وفي هذه الدراسة يستنبط المؤلف آراء الكواكبي حول الفصل بين الدين والدولة من أسباب التعصب الديني التي أدت في نظر الكواكبي إلى انحطاط كل من دولة الإسلام وأفراد الأمة الإسلامية والتي أدت بالتالي إلى اكتشاف الداء لديه ألا وهو الفصل، فإذاً أول الأسباب هو سبب الجهل. كما واستنبط المؤلف الأسباب الأخرى التي أثبتها وعالجها الكواكبي في مؤلفاته وآراءه. وقد نهج جان دايه في بحثه هذا منهجاً علمياً بحتاً تجلى في حسن العرض، ووضوح العبارة وجلاء القصد والتوثيق والمناقشة والتاريخ. وهو لم يكتف بجمع ما يلزمه من بينات نظرية وإنما قرنها ببينات موثقة من أقوال اصحابها وعلى الأخص أقوال الكواكبي في مختلف كتبه ومقالاته، وسعى جاهداً إلى إثبات نسبه لقب "رجل مسلم حرّ الأفكار".
"وإن أنسى لا أنسى ما فعلته عمتاي، بنتا عبد الرحمن الكواكبي، الشيختان: عفيفة وعدوية، حينما راحتا توزعان بيانً انتخابياً ف مطلع الخمسينات، في السوق وبين الاسر الاسلامية، حتى اذا قال لهما أحد الرجال: يا شيختان، ما بالكم تدعيان لصالح رجل مسيحي وأنتما بنتا شيخ المسلمين، أجابتا: لقد ربانا أبونا على عدم التعصف وعلى مناصرة كل رجل صالح، مهما كان دينه، يعمل لخير أهل دينه وللاسلام في أمور دنياهم".
