هي أقوال مثقف حر يمتلىء معرفة وأفكاراً ورؤى، الشيخ "يوسف الخازن" ، وهي أحوال مصر الداخلية والخارجية في عصر التحولات الكبرى، فقرأها في كتاب من إعداد وتقديم "جان دايه" وَسَمَه بعنوان (أقوال وأحوال) ، وقدم له الدكتور غسان الخالد بمقدمة عن تاريخ مصر الخديوية تتمحور حول الحالة السياسية والإجتماعية والإقتصادية التي كانت سائدة في مصر خلال وجود الشيخ يوسف في عاصمتها وكتابته عنها وهي فترة (الحرب العالمية الأولى) حتى يتمكن قارىء مقالات الشيخ يوسف الخازن التي حرّرها اثناء هجرته إلى مصر من وضعها في إطارها التاريخي والتعرّف على الأسماء المذكورة في متنها وفهم تعليقاتها على الأحداث والصراعات، وهي حقبة مضى عليها قرن ونيّف ولكنها الأهم في ما يعرف بعصر النهضة العربية.
وعليه، يكون الكتاب حصيلة مجموعة من المقالات في الصحافة المكتوبة بمصر للشيخ يوسف الخازن صدرت في افتتاحيات جريدته (الأخبار) العام 1896 وغيرها من صحف، كتب فيها قبل إصدار هذه الجريدة وهي مقالات يوسف الخازن المصرية مجموعة في هذا الكتاب تعيده إلى القارىء العربي شاباً في مطلع حياته الصحفية فيتراءى له بين سطورها فكره الحر وثقافته الواسعة وحكمه الصريح، وسخريته اللاذعة وقلمه اللمّاع، مزايا جعلته من كبار الصحفيين "الشوام" في مصر.
